Our organization

The Dante Alighieri Society of Washington is a membership organization with an Executive Board of four officers and consiglieri. Executive Board members are elected each year at the Society’s Annual General meeting, usually held the second Wednesday in April. The Italian language program operates under the supervision and coordination of a language program director, ex-officio Board member.

Our history

Early roots of the Dante Alighieri Society of Washington date back to 1908. First officers are depicted in the photo. The first president Dr. DeDonato was a local physician.  He received Presidential recognition for his anti-fascist Italian radio broadcasts during World War II.  Since then periodical reorganizations and improvements occurred to keep up with time. Today the Dante Alighieri Society of Washington is a vibrant organization with a calendar full of engaging events, a series of popular online Italian language courses, the Italian language certification PLIDA and a landmark for all the italsimpatici in the Seattle area and beyond.

Students Testimonials: “I love taking classes with my instructor. I think he is a very patient and effective instructor, and he makes learning fun and interesting. He's very good at not only conveying the material, but often times expanding on context and important additional notes that are very helpful. He creates a very good learning experience, and I'm lucky to have him as my teacher.” / “I think my instructor is a fabulous teacher. She speaks Italian super clear and at the right pace for our level. She is excellent at keeping the content engaging for the whole 90 minute class (impressive!). I enjoy her teaching style and pace and hope to have her as my teacher again.” / "I’m very happy with our instructor’s expertise, approachability, and professionalism as well as a class of students who really challenge me with their high level Italian. The class is a perfect balance of being supportive and yet challenging.” / I liked the way this class is taught. I have taken several classes before and this time I actually am retaining the grammar better.”/ “Book was good and so was the workbook.”/ “I think the way the materials are presented for class are very helpful, and the formatting works well. “ / “The only other language class I have taken is high school Spanish, and I think this class is more fun and better structured.”  / “It has been the best Italian language program I have taken” / “This is the best Italian class I’ve taken with an excellent instructor; it’s intense, but really fun.” “I use all the material and especially like the option to check our answers - it helps me see, before a class, what I need to practice more. It helps me to be prepared before class.” /I liked the after-class activities we did to reinforce what we learned in class.” / Organizational structure for each session (what to do before, etc.) is great. “ / ”The convenience of online courses cannot be beat. I honestly do not think I would physically attend a class held at the same time and with the same frequency.” / “Online - it makes it easier for me because I travel 3-4 days a week for work. I can take my learning material and computer anywhere!”
